Overview

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a major government agency that sets standards for marketing, packing, and storing food in India. The FSSAI has ordered that every food business operator obtain an eligible food licence in order to assure the highest level of food safety. The FSSAI is a government-run organisation that reports to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Government of India. In compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, the FSSAI specifies different rules and standards.

  • The primary legal consent required for running food business in India is the FSSAI License/Registration.


  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requires all food industry operators, including online food vendors, to register. Any violation of this provision would result in severe consequences.


  • Voted ID, Aahaar Card, DL, Health NOC, business owner's pictures, and other papers are commonly required to apply for Basic FSSAI registration.


  • From the date of application submission, the licencing authority normally takes a week or two to grant the Basic FSSAI registration.


  • Rs. 100/year for the basic licence, Rs. 2000 to Rs. 5000 for the state licence, and Rs. 7500 for the central licence.


  • Ready-to-eat foods are pre-cleaned, pre-cooked, and ready to eat without further preparation, whereas ready-to-cook foods contain all of the components but require some preparation and cooking according to the package's instructions.


  • The FSSAI licence is premise-based. A single FSSAI licence can be filed for for all types of food industry activities undertaken at the same location.


  • If a food business operator's licence or registration is suspended or cancelled, he or she must immediately cease all food business operations. Carrying on any food business activity with a suspended or cancelled license/registration is illegal and will result in criminal charges under the FSS Act of 2006.


  • No, there is no need to send physical documents to Regional/State offices for a Central/State licence.
